About Ayana
Davis Hernandez

From her early days as a Nutmeg State native to her transition to the Tar Heel State, Ayana Davis Hernandez’s career as a prolific storyteller began in magazine publishing.

Her innate talent and passion for storytelling were evident long before she appeared on the masthead of a national lifestyle magazine just months after earning her undergraduate degree in English (minor in Writing) from Spelman College in Atlanta. This passion was nurtured during a summer college internship at Glamour magazine in the Conde’ Nast headquarters in New York City, where she set her sights on working and learning in the industry that would allow her to develop memorable content and position brands and people for success. Her first job at Essence Magazine was just the beginning, as she later continued to contribute her talents to the industry as beauty editor for Heart & Soul magazine.

Ayana transitioned into communications and public relations and began serving in the external affairs department of Episcopal Relief and Development, an international non-governmental organization based in New York City. While visiting countries such as Haiti and Zambia, it was her responsibility to humanize the deeply personal stories of children and families who were directly impacted by the organization’s projects—such as initiatives that responded to natural and humanmade disasters, or those that provided economic opportunities to communities impacted by poverty and injustice, supplied basic healthcare and built internal community capacity. During this time, Ayana also pursued and earned a Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communications from New York University.

Furthering her desire to elevate her skills as a communications strategist, Ayana was served as a vice president at the Raleigh, N.C., office of FleishmanHillard International Communications. She managed client accounts and served as day-to-day, client relationship manager. While at the agency, she secured several local and national media placements in print, broadcast, radio and online outlets, including “LIVE! With Regis and Kelly,” “Today” Show, KTLA- Los Angeles, Wall Street Journal and USA Today. Additionally, she conducted message and media training workshops with C-suite leadership teams. She and her team won a Silver Anvil Award of Excellence from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and several InSpire Awards presented by the North Carolina chapter of PRSA during her tenure at the firm. More than a decade ago, Ayana transitioned into higher education, a move that reflects her commitment to lifelong learning. This decision was deeply rooted in her upbringing, as both her parents were secondary public school educators. She worked at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) for more than 10 years in roles including director of public relations, associate vice chancellor for communications and marketing and special assistant to the Chancellor. After serving at NCCU, Ayana was named associate vice chancellor of Strategic Communications at Elizabeth City State University. In this role, she served as the university’s chief communication and marketing officer. She led and managed marketing, media, social media, brand management strategy and internal and external communications, execution and evaluation. Ayana was responsible for the implementation of a proactive, innovative, and comprehensive marketing, communications, and branding strategy that highlighted the university’s strengths, expanded its regional and national profile, and increased active and informed internal constituents and external audiences.

Ayana’s influence extends beyond her professional roles. She has been a featured speaker or panelist for numerous discussions and podcasts, including the University of North Carolina System Advancement Symposium, the Higher Voltage podcast, Public Relations Society of America Counselors to Higher Education, HBCU Executive Media Training Institute and North Carolina Chapter of Public Relations Society of America’s Strategic Communications Conference.

Today, she continues to truthfully story tell, educate, uplift, communicate and transform brands through ADHernandez Consulting, LLC.
